Prix d’excellence 2014 de la Fondation Enovos

Raoul Schmitz, a computer science master graduate from the University of Luxembourg spent six months at the VehicularLab in 2013 to work on an interface between an electic car and a mobile device. The purpose of the interface was to read the energy consumption of the vehicle to provide feedback to the driver on how to increase the energy efficiency in order to extend the driving range.

For this work, Raoul was awarded with the  "Prix d'excellence 2014 de la Fondation Enovos". The entire VehicularLab team congratulates Raoul for this achievment and wishes him all the best for his future career as an engineer.

Motion-S at FleetExpo

The SenseFleet PoC project has reached a new milestone. During the FleetExpo event held in Luxembourg, November 12th 2014, the project team presented for the first time what is now called the Motion-S solution to the public. At this event, all major actors of the automotive market in and around Luxembourg where present. It allowed us to get in touch with potential customers and get feedback on the proposed solution.

For this occasion, the team presented the latest release of the mobile application and the analytics backend. The feedback was posstiv and lots of business cards have been exchanged. Stay tuned for the next chapter of the adventure!

DRIVE Experiment in Colmar-Berg

The DRIVE experiment has been successfully conducted at the training track in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg. Fifteen drivers volunteered to participate in the validation of the DRIVE protocol, which has been developed by third year PhD student Markus Forster. The aim of the experiment was to show that the so-called shock wave phenomenon can be avoided by coordinating the traffic flow. This was achieved by exchanging driving dynamics between the vehicles using a vehicular network. 

A prototype using a Raspberry Pi and a high frequency GPS receiver has been developed and mounted in every participating vehicle. An audio signal has been used to notify the driver to slowdown in order to avoid traffic perturbations. The preliminary results are promising and a full report will be submitted as part of a journal paper by the end of the year.

Communicating Cars fight Phantom Jams

shockwave recently published an article on the DRIVE protocol that has been developed within the VehicularLab. 

The DRIVE protocol is intended to be used by Collaborative adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) systems to avoid the formation of so called "Shock waves" that are responsible for slow downs in dense traffic scenarios.

The protocol has recently been published at INFOCOM 2014. An experimental validation of a prototype system is planned for the end of September 2014.

SECON’14 SenseFleet Demo

A demonstration of the SenseFleet Platform has been performed at the IEEE International Conference on Sensing, Communication and Networking (SECON'14).

The demo included a presentation of the SenseFleet mobile application and analytical back-end. A prerecorded video of a test drive has been used to explain how the adaptive profiling is performed and events triggered. The session was well attended and feedback was positive.

We are looking forward to the first release of the application planned for the end of the year!

VehicularLab Demos

In May, the VehicularLab presented its recent research activities at two important events. The first was the iMobility Challenge which was organized by ACL and FIA in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg. This event is part of the European iMobility Challenge campaign, a two-year project to promote smart, safe and sustainable traffic and transport technologies and applications. The second event was the third edition of the SnT Partnership Day, which aims at promoting partnership programs with industry and academia.

At both events we presented the modified version of our ultra-compact Twizy E-Vehicle, which integrates additional hardware components to provide connected services. Further a demonstration has been performed using Lego Mindstorms Robots to show how highway traffic jams occur and how they can be avoided. Both events have been largely covered by the local media. LuxTraffic integrated into Eldoradio App

Exactly two years after the initial release of the LuxTraffic platform, we are proud to announce that Eldoradio, a popular Luxembourgish radio station has integrated the LuxTraffic service into their mobile application. The application provides various services, including one of the most complete traffic information system available in Luxembourg.

This collaboration allows to extend the LuxTraffic community by several thousand potential users, providing important information on the traffic characteristics in Luxembourg. This data will be very useful to continue the development of new traffic services. With the launch of the new FNR MAMBA project, LuxTraffic will be one important building blocks to develop new multimodal mobility services.

2nd GI/ITG KuVS IVC Fachgespräch @ VehicularLab

The second edition of the GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch on Inter-Vehicle Communications co-organised by the VehicularLab, was held at the University of Luxembourg/SnT, February 20-21, 2014.

With more than 25 participants, the event was a huge success. Twelve papers on different topics around IVC have been presented by young researchers. Every presentation was followed by a discussion leading to a dynamic interaction between the participants. In addition to an academic keynote held by Prof. Claudio Casetti, a VEINS tutorial has been organised.

Due to the success of the event, it has been decided to re-organise the event next year. Thanks again to all the participants and see you next year in Ulm! More information on the event and the speakers can be found here.

fAVoR Project Presentation @ UCLA

Second year PhD student Lara Codea is spending three weeks at University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) to work with local students on the urban traffic flow optimization problem. This research exchange is sponsored by the doctoral school of the Computer Science Department of the University of Luxembourg.

Lara, presented her PhD project fAVoR to a graduate class to recruit interested students and foster collaboration with researchers at UCLA. Upon completion of the project, the results are planned to be published at a selected conference or workshop.
